Shot after the Idol Gives back show... Import.flv (11.8 MB)
A brief news story about Blake's support in Seattle for his run on American Idol Import.flv (2.4 MB)
For American Idol contestant Blake Lewis, the show is not just about making music and showcasing his talents to a captive audience – it’s also about giving back.
The 25-year-old resident of Bothell, Washington, has called upon
childhood pal Kristi Redman, 25, to head up his campaign of giving,
which ties into his newly created fan group, The Blaker Girls.
Anxious to do something positive with his newfound celebrity, Lewis
decided to translate his fan support into dollars to benefit cancer
research initiatives at Seattle’s Children’s Hospital.
According to Redman, Lewis chose to put his support behind this
organization after two friends, Brad and Heather, who happen to also
date, were diagnosed with lymphoma within months of each other. One of
them currently receives treatment at the Seattle hospital.
“We came up with the idea for the fan group and merchandise and
thought there’s got to be something we can do to give back. We don’t
need all this for ourselves and Blake doesn’t need it,” Redman
explains. “Blake immediately wanted to give to cancer research at
Children’s Hospital. Brad went to high school with us and we’ve all
gotten close with his girlfriend Heather,” she says, adding that both
are expected to make a full and complete recovery.
For the local community and the hospital benefiting from Lewis’ act
of charity, Redman says it is quite a thrill. “[Children’s] is really
happy to see someone who’s local and now famous using his celebrity for
a good cause,” she said. Should Lewis advance to the top three, he will
be rewarded with a visit to his hometown with Idol cameras in
tow – a visit Redman is eagerly anticipating. “I know he wants to visit
the hospital as soon as possible. I’ve got to figure out with him what
his schedule is,” she explains. “That is definitely something that
would be great for him to do.”
In the meantime, Redman continues to man BlakerGirls.com, Lewis’
official online presence, as well as a MySpace page where fans can
leave messages of support and donate to the cause. Merchandise created
by Redman and the Blaker Girls team is available through an outside
retailer, and comes emblazoned with the phrase “Blaker Girl” or “Blaker
Boy.”
Having already raised more than $2500 for Children’s Hospital,
Redman is hopeful that Lewis’ celebrity status will continue to serve a
philanthropic purpose regardless of his duration on Idol.
“His days are long, he doesn’t get enough sleep, but reacting and
interacting with the fans is so important to him,” Redman says of her
hard-working pal. “He appreciates the votes and says he can spend two
seconds writing an autograph. Doing the show is such a thrill for him.”

Original message from Andrea (co-founder of The Blaker Girls): Here's an article written about Blake in The Nordic
News, the newspaper for Inglemoor High School (where Blake graduated
from in 1999). It's a cute article and I hope you all enjoy it!

The Blaker Girls
"Blake-mania takes over the Northwest" - by Helena Prikyan
The city of Seattle has attracted national attention - not for its rain
or great coffee, but for its musical talent. Two of the last 10
finalists on American Idol, a TV search for the next new pop star, are
from the one and only "Emerald City".
The talk of the town seems to be Blake Lewis, who may be the most
unique talent to appear on the show. Lewis blends beat boxing with
different genres of music to create a truly original style, something
judge Randy Jackson dubbed "Blake-izing".
This exceptional artist comes from our very own high school. "He was
involved in every choir program Inglemoor offered, and was very
passionate about them," recalled Blake's father Dallas Lewis. And it
didn't stop there; Lewis revealed his potential by taking part in all
kinds of musical activities, such as vocal competitions and becoming
Seattle's beat boxing champion.
"He was in many funny comedies and musicals. He did Shakespeare, sand
and danced," said his mother Dinah Lewis, "He had amazing talent."
After graduating from Inglemoor in '99, Lewis broke into the music
scene by joining a capella group Kickshaw. The five talented singers
who made up the group toured the Northwest, playing almost every type
of event imaginable. Each time they gave audiences a unique "mouth
music" experience, creating the sound of instruments using only their
mouths. Their upbeat, rhythmic style and creative vocal arrangements
made for exciting dance music. After the group's disbandment, Lewis
became a solo act and played with different bands, eventually hitting
the American Idol stage where he still keeps their spirited sound alive
by delivering an energetic performance week after week.
"He's not the best singer, but he's the most talented," expressed
senior Justin Y, "He knows how to entertain the people, and knows what
they want to hear." Perhaps it's his eye-catching stage presence, or
the magical way Lewis can take a song from any time period, "Blake-ize"
it with a mix of new rhythms and beat boxes, and end up with something
that people of all ages and musical tastes can enjoy. Or as his mother
says, "He's real; he brings 2007 into each song." Whatever the reason
may be, Lewis is clearly doing something right, for his enormous fan
base and endless support suggests he has what it takes to get to the
top.
"I think his uniqueness puts him ahead of the competition. He has the
potential to go really far on the show," says junior Katlyn S.
Kristi R., a childhood friend of Lewis, undoubtedly agrees. She
graduated from Inglemoor class of 2000, just one year after Lewis.
"Right after Blake's first audition, me and some friends joked around,
and said we should start a fan club," said Kristi in an exclusive
Nordic News interview. "But as he kept progressing through the show, we
thought, huh, we really should start one!"
So Kristi and her friends became serious and created a fan club called
"The Blaker Girls," complete with a website and Blake Lewis
paraphernalia. Although The Blaker Girls had a humble beginning, their
success has catapulted; the club has become wildly popular, topping
3000 members nationwide, 15,000 website hits, and about $4000 in
merchandise sales.
The website provides a multitude of information for all the Lewis fans
out there and gives support not only to Lewis, but also to a charity
close to his heart. "To honor his friends Brad B. and Heather K. (both
Inglemoor alums), a couple who were both diagnosed with lymphoma last
year, Blake wanted to give back and support cancer research," explained
Kristi. "At Blake's request, we've aligned ourselves with Children's
Hospital in Seattle and 50% of all merchandise profits will go toward
cancer research at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in
Seattle, WA. So far we've raised about $1200 for Children's"
Lewis may seem too good to be true, but he is genuinely an
extraordinary person. Anyone who has known him is quick to describe his
kind, giving nature, and say without hesitation that he deserves to win
the show. "He plays the drums, guitar, and piano," said Kristi. "He
also writes, produces, and creates his own music. No one deserves this
more than him; he has truly workjed hard to hone his talents."
The Blaker Girls however, aren't the only people in the city supporting
Lewis in a positive manner. Out entire community has rightfully treated
Lewis like a VIP and provided him with a lot of support. The city of
Bothell, for example, recognized his talent and presented him with a
most unusual honor: April 11 has been officially proclaimed Blake Lewis
Day.
Linda Hamilton, a mentor and old voice coach of Lewis' loves the
support. "Blake is talented and numble. He's just a cool kid. The
community is giving back to him and he has given them so much. It's
just awesome."
With unbeatable suave, smashing good looks, his entire hometown
rallying behind him, and growing support from all across the country,
Lewis has a promising future ahead of him - both on and off the show.
Kristi summed it up best, "Blake should win American Idol because he is
a breath of fresh air not only on the show but on the music charts as
well. he can sing, dance and beat box; there is nothing like him out
there. He is something exciting and new that we've never heard before."
Good Luck, Blake!
